About Film Negative to Photo

Film Negative to Photo converts a digital image of photographic negative film into a positive image. Color-negative mode can estimate the film base from the image corners to reduce the orange mask, while auto levels, gamma, contrast, saturation and RGB controls let you fine-tune the result without uploading the image.

How to use Film Negative to Photo

  1. 1

Photograph or scan the film negative as evenly and sharply as possible, then choose the JPG, PNG or WebP image.

  2. 2

Select Color Negative, B&W Negative or Raw Invert depending on the source film.

  3. 3

For color film, keep corner film-base compensation enabled when the image corners contain clear unexposed film.

  4. 4

Use Auto levels as a starting point, then fine-tune brightness, contrast, gamma, saturation and RGB balance while watching the preview.

  5. 5

Switch between Original negative and Converted preview to compare the result.

  6. 6

Choose JPG or PNG and click Create Photo. The downloadable image is generated at the original source resolution.

Tips for better results

  • For best color-negative results, include a small amount of clear film base around the frame so the corner sampling can estimate the orange mask.
  • If the photo fills every corner, disable film-base compensation and use Auto levels plus RGB balance manually.
  • Even lighting and a neutral backlight improve results more than aggressive correction after capture.
  • Using a higher-quality original file can help produce a better conversion result.

Frequently asked questions

Can this convert orange color negatives into normal photos?

Yes. Color Negative mode inverts the negative and can estimate the film base from the corners to compensate for the orange mask, followed by levels and color adjustments.

Does it work with black-and-white negatives?

Yes. B&W Negative mode converts the inverted image to grayscale and applies tonal correction controls.

Why does film-base compensation sometimes make the color worse?

The corner estimator assumes the corners contain clear film base. If a subject or frame content occupies the corners, turn the option off and adjust levels and RGB balance manually.
